FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) - The Lathrop girls soccer team earned bragging rights against their cross-town rivals Tuesday, beating West Valley with a final score of 1-0 in a low-scoring affair.

The game marks the first of two meetings between the Fairbanks schools this season.

Lathrop forward Maya Scanlon, who scored the game’s only goal, said it’s “always stressful playing [West Valley] every season. It’s usually a super close game.”

“There were a lot of instances that West Valley could have scored on us, and they were really just shut down by our keeper and back line,” Scanlon said.

Lathrop goalkeeper Jadynn Lowery played a big part in the shoutout. She left the game early after being injured blocking a goal kick.

“She’s so important, probably the most important player on the field,” Scanlon said. “We couldn’t do it without her.”

The Malamutes improved to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. The Wolfpack dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference with the loss.

Lathrop and West Valley will meet again next week right back at Hez Ray Park.
