PORTAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska is known for its vast wilderness and iconic scenery, but to experience some of the best of Alaska, you have to get off the road system.

The Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop is about 7 1/2 miles south of Portage in the Kenai Mountains. The remote railroad stop sits alongside the Chugach National Forest Service and offers hikers, boaters and sightseers immediate access to the backcountry.

During a recent trip, we meet conductor Marty Weatherell, who has worked for the railroad for more than 30 years, following in his dad and brother’s career footsteps.

“I think a lot of people that ride this train find the remoteness of Alaska really intriguing, they really like it,” Weatherell said.

Passengers aboard the Glacier Discovery train are eager to see more remote areas of the state, many looking forward to seeing Spencer Glacier by raft or hiking a nearby trail.
