ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska has some of the best fishing in the world, and peak fishing season is right around the corner.

Whether you’re a resident or a tourist, you are required to purchase your sport fishing license before grabbing your pole and hitting the water.

“Getting your fishing license is really easy,” Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Katelyn Zonneville explained. “It usually takes about five minutes.”

Licenses can be purchased at ADFG offices or online. There are additional requirements and fees for King Salmon fishing and dipnetting.

Anglers over the age of 60 are eligible to receive permanent sport fishing licenses, free of charge.

“Fishing is an awesome way to get outside, especially with your family,” Zonneville said, adding that ADFG stocks a variety of species in lakes and streams across the state, making fishing more accessible for anglers of all abilities.

If caught fishing in Alaska without a proper license, penalties include fines, potential court appearances, confiscation of equipment, and the possibility of fishing privileges being suspended.
