ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Although separated by roughly three miles, Colony and Palmer High Schools don’t see each other on the pitch very often as members of different conferences and divisions. With this in mind, once teammates-turned-opposing-coaches, make an effort to find a spot on the schedule to continue the crosstown rivalry.

”It’s always great, we always like to play the Moose,” Colony boys soccer head coach Jeremy Johnson said. “Blake [Livingston] and I, their coach, went to high school together, played together for Palmer. So we always make sure to get together before the season and try and find a date we can play. We’re in different divisions, different conferences, but we’re so close together, we like to find a match.”

Late April soccer in Alaska can bring a wide variety of conditions, but in the Matanuska Valley, you can almost always count on the wind, which was gusting up to 35 miles per hour Wednesday night when the two Palmer schools met on the pitch.

A rivalry like this doesn’t need much more hyping up, but both teams have seen strong starts to the season. Colony has climbed to become the team to beat early on, posting nine wins, two draws, and zero losses heading into the matchup, with Palmer is the top team in Division II, also undefeated at 6-1-0.

With the Moose missing a few key players, and the Knights firing on all cylinders on home turf, Colony cruised to a 6-1 victory, with several players contributing to the win. After the Knights opened up the scoring early, Palmer senior Noah Gallego scored the lone Moose goal to tie the match 1-1.

Colony saw a free kick strike from Eli Ingle and another goal for Jonathan Figgins to take a 3-1 lead heading into halftime. Ingle scored again in the second half, while Owen Dietz added his own goal off a corner kick from Alexander King to secure the victory.

“It was a windy day today, as always out here in the Valley,” Johnson said. “I thought the boys tried hard, worked well together. It was a tough first half going into the wind, but we were able to come out of it with a lead which was nice.”

Colony, last year’s state runner-ups, will carry its undefeated record into a match with West Valley on Friday.

”If we can stay healthy, I think we’ve got a good chance to get there, but so do a lot of teams,” Johnson said of a return to the state championship game. “There are a lot of good teams out there, I think there are six, seven, eight teams on the boys side for sure that really have a good chance to make the final this year. It’s a tough go, it is really about who is healthy and playing well when you get to that weekend at the end of May.”
