South Anchorage Baseball snaps Service win streak in late night comeback
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - For the first time since June 2023, the Service Cougars found themselves staring at an “L” at the end of their game’s regulation.
That loss was courtesy of Service’s southside rival, the South Anchorage Wolverines.
The game at Mulcahy stadium went the distance — to the final inning — before South was able to edge out a 3-2 victory in walk-off fashion. The game marked the first loss for Service since the 2023 state title match.
“I’m happy for the guys,” South head coach Taylor Nerland said. “We’re going to enjoy it tonight and then get ready to get back at it tomorrow.”
South jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, a run that would remain the only one on the scoreboard for the majority of the contest.
David Feigner pitched a full game for the Wolverines, finishing the night with seven strikeouts.
“[Feigner] going the distance for us was the game plan,” Nerland said. “He’s a real workhorse for us out there.”
“It shows that he’s got trust in me,” Feigner said.
Leading for most of the ballgame, South almost gave it away late. Service was able to claw back in the beginning of the sixth off an error that allowed Sebastian Fournier to score.
In the seventh, the Cougars took full control. Connor Monahan reached base off another Wolverine error that brought in Kegan Lennox, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead with just a half inning left to go.
“They are a quality team,” Nerland said. “To beat them, you gotta go at them.”
Needing a score to send things to extra innings, South came out hot in the bottom of the seventh.
Jim Massey got the Wolverines going with a single to begin the inning, later advancing to second on a Logan Hulquist sac fly, to get into scoring position.
In the next at-bat, Chase Mascelli brought Massey home with an RBI double. The senior helped secure the game-tying run after celebrating his graduation just a day earlier.
With the winning run now just 180 feet away, Landon Drumm made sure to capitalize. The All-State wide receiver for South football capped off the inning with a single out to left field.
Mascelli, not looking like he would slow down, took off for home. He slid into home as the Wolverines dugout erupted, winning 3-2 off a Drumm walkoff.
“I saw coach’s arms waving, and I was gone. I heard ‘get down,’ got down, and it was good enough to get the job done,” Mascelli said.
South returns to the diamond Thursday night to face West Anchorage. Service needs to rebound for the first time in almost two years, as they battle Bartlett.
The regular season for high school baseball ends for both teams on May 23.
