West Valley baseball beats Lathrop in late-inning comeback
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) - The West Valley Baseball beat their crosstown rival, Lathrop, in a late-inning comeback. The Wolfpack were down 2-0 in the 7th inning until they scored off two Malamutes wild pitches.
West Valley Left Fielder Hayden May knew at that moment, they were going to win.
“After the couple pass balls, I knew that like we were in this, we had a chance,” said May. “All that mattered was just bring the ball and play.”
May who scored the walk-off hit at the end took advantage of Lathrop’s pitching struggles.
“A lot of fastballs saw a couple of curveballs. I just knew I had to make contact with each one I couldn’t strike out,” said May.
May also said the team never lost hope despite being shut out for six innings.
“I just think that our team is good at persevering, staying strong. We’re all hype for each other, all accomplishing much to each other,” May said. “We’re just pushing each other to trying to be our best.”
The two Fairbanks rivals will meet again on Friday, May 23.
