ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A power outage forced operations at Alyeska Ski Resort to be suspended Monday as high winds battered the popular ski area southeast of Anchorage.

Alyeska Digital and PR Marketing Manager Abbey Brau confirmed to Alaska’s News Source that a local power outage closed not only the lifts on the mountain, but also the Nordic Spa and the Hotel Alyeska pool. Brau said there is no timeline for when things will reopen, but said all skiing on the mountain is done for the day and called it a “wait and see” operation.

A power outage forced operations at Alyeska Ski Resort to be suspended Monday as high winds battered the popular ski area southeast of Anchorage.

Guests will receive refunds on lift tickets, Brau said, adding that food and beverage service within hotel properties have been suspended.

Brau said “significant” winds were seen on the upper slopes of Alyeska earlier in the day — which initially closed the mountain’s uppermost lift and the popular tram due to the wind gusts — and that crews anticipated gusts of 50 mph or more.

A power outage map on Chugach Electric’s website showed just over 500 customers without power in the Girdwood area just after 1 p.m. Monday, about 27% of total customers in the town.
