ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage residents dealt with challenging conditions Tuesday, whether they were in a vehicle or walking the streets, as icy streets made things tough.

Major roads in the municipality were mostly wet but drivable during the day, but many neighborhood streets were covered in ice and so were the sidewalks.

A spokesperson for Providence Alaska Medical Center said the Emergency Department treated more than 40 people for injuries related to falls.

Residents seemed to be dealing with it regardless.

“I’ve just kind of come to expect the unexpected when it comes to weather around here,” Scott Fritz said as he walked near Westchester Lagoon. “I didn’t see this coming, but I’m not surprised either.”

Betsy Winkler, a ski coach at Dimond High School, said she was disappointed in the standing water she saw on Westchester Lagoon. She was hoping the team could go ice skating to get some exercise.

Lifelong Alaskan Eric Love agreed, saying the weather was making it a little tough to get outdoors.

“I mean, it does make it a little treacherous,” he said. “I bike a lot, it’s sloppy. So it’s a little too warm, but I mean the sun’s out, the snow’s melting, it will be a nice break-up, so in that sense I like it.”

Mike Braniff with the Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department said there is standing water on several local lakes used for skating but that the ice beneath is still quite solid.
