ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A backcountry avalanche warning has been issued for Southcentral Alaska.

The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center issued the warning, saying avalanche danger is high. It is in effect from Sunday at 3 a.m. to Monday at 3 a.m.

The warning covers the Western Chugach and Kenai Mountains, which includes the areas around Chugach State Park, Girdwood, Portage, Turnagain Pass, Moose Pass, Summit Lake, Lost Lake and Seward, according to the center.

According to the Alaska Department of transportation, Thompson Pass on the Richardson Highway will be closing at 10 p.m. Saturday because of avalanche and weather concerns.
