High water reaches buildings in Anchor Point
High waters cause homeowner headaches
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The warm and wet weather that pervaded over the Southcentral region this last weekend resulted in winter flooding on the Kenai Peninsula.
Excessive rain and run-off swelled the Anchor River to the point a flood warning was issued for the southern Kenai Peninsula waterway.
The river spilled into nearby yards and around buildings, as waters crested at nearly 6 and a half feet, about five feet above where it was just a few days before. More than 2 inches of rain was reported in the area Saturday. The heavy rain combined with snow and ice melt filled the river quickly.
At one point on Sunday, the Anchor Point road was fully impassable, and shallow water was flowing over the Sterling highway at mile marker 160-161.
The river has been steadily falling since Sunday. The flood warning was lifted Monday morning and there are no further warnings or advisories in effect.
