New explosive activity on Atka volcano in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A watch was issued for the Atka Volcanic Complex after explosive activity Thursday evening.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory said a small explosive event happened at 7:26 p.m. They say a small amount of volcanic ash was likely erupted, although clouds blocked any view of ash in the atmosphere below 10,000 feet and there was no ash detected above the clouds.
The observatory will continue to monitor the Atka volcanic complex using infrasound sensors, seismic data, and web cameras.
The AVO describes a watch as a “volcano exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, or eruption is underway but poses limited hazards”.
The Great Sitkin volcano is also under a watch, for on-going lava flow.
Mount Spurr, an active volcano near Anchorage, is under an Advisory after increased activity of unrest.
The activity could be a sign of a larger eruption coming, although Alaska Volcano Observatory scientists say more signs are needed to know if an eruption is imminent.
Updates will be made as they become available.
