ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Strong winds are impacting much of Southcentral Alaska Wednesday and are expected to continue through early Thursday morning.

April 16 - 3 p.m.

Chugach Electric says its crews are prepared to handle any potential outages from the windstorm.

Outages in some areas may last several hours.

Julie Hasquet with Chugach Electric says residents should get their emergency supplies ready in the event of a long outage.

“If there’s going to be a power outage, what provisions do you need?” Hasquet asked rhetorically. “Do you have some food set aside? Some medicine, maybe flashlights, anything for your pets? Maybe a cooler set aside to put cold goods in for the time being, and charge your electronics. If you have your phone charged and your kids iPads charged then you can get through a few hours.”

Hasquet says crews are on the clock 24/7.

Residents looking for the most up-to-date power outage maps in the Anchorage area can visit the Chugach Electric website. Mat-Su and Eagle River residents can use the MEA outage map. Kenai Peninsula residents can visit the Homer Electric map.

April 16 - 1:30 p.m.

Gusty winds are strengthening across Southcentral, with peak wind gusts already topping out at more than 90 mph through South Anchorage, to more than 70 mph in Portage, and to near 50 mph in Homer, Kenai and Palmer.

Winds will continue to increase through the day, with the High Wind Warning for the hillsides of Anchorage and Eagle River, as well as Portage, expiring at 1 a.m. Meanwhile, areas of the Aleutians and Southwest Alaska will continue to hold onto gusty winds, snow and areas of wintry mix.

There are multiple power outages being reported by the Homer Electric Association.

Sterling is reporting that over 200 customers are reporting they are without power. Over 50 people have reported power outages south of Kasilof.

Further south, near Ninichik and Happy Valley, over 1,200 customers have reported power outages.

Time to prepare for the next storm Southcentral! The winds will start ramping up Wednesday morning, staying strong through the evening with very wet conditions along the coast. Be prepared for wind gusts to 90 mph on the Anchorage upper Hillside. Gusts over 50 mph are likely for most of south Anchorage, south of Dimond Blvd, and 25-45 mph for the rest of the city. This storm will also deliver strong winds and very wet conditions to the coastal areas of Southcentral.
