Anchorage woman devotes nearly 600 hours a year to fight hunger
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The work never stops inside the Food Bank of Alaska.
The same could be said for one of its most committed volunteers, Karen Burnett.
“It’s exciting because we know we’re going to be busy,” she said with a smile.
For the past four years, the Anchorage woman has dedicated her time to sorting, packing and organizing food donations. Most days, she can be found in the sorting room, ensuring every item finds its place.
She understands that even the smallest contributions can make a big difference.
“I mean, look at the size of these apple juices,” she said, holding up a small juice carton during a recent volunteer shift. “That wouldn’t get too far for a family, but they’re just right for a kid.”
Burnett’s journey at the Food Bank of Alaska began after a personal loss. Following the death of her husband, Burnett said she found herself with time on her hands and a desire to help.
“I had a friend who had talked to me about it, and it just sounded like a good thing to be out doing,” she explained. “I started, but it got to be so fun. I spent more and more time here.”
Four years later, Burnett logs between 500-600 volunteer hours a year, witnessing firsthand the growing need in the community, particularly in recent years as more families struggle to make ends meet.
“If you took a look at the pantry and saw those empty shelves, it’s hard sometimes when you know people are coming in and looking for something for their clients, and there’s absolutely nothing in there,” she said.
Her dedication has made a lasting impact on countless families.
“I just feel real involvement in a way that is appreciated,” Burnett said. “You know, people need this food. They need people to put it out for them.”
As part of Hunger Action Month, the Food Bank of Alaska is putting on Restaurant Week beginning on Monday.
Between Sept. 23-28, a portion of over 20 restaurants’ proceeds will go straight to the food bank.
