Fairbanks Youth Safety Day teaches kids essential survival skills
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) - Teaching kids how to survive events like earthquakes, wildfires, and road safety was the name of the game Tuesday at the Youth Safety Day.
Staying safe on the road, through the annual bike rodeo, is what Fairbanks Emergency Preparedness and Youth Safety Day organizers say they hope families took away from the annual event.
“It could be a matter of life and death for a family member if they’re in trouble and they’re home alone with their child and they have something that unexpectedly happens,” said borough Emergency Manager Nancy Durham, who emphasized the importance of teaching essential skills to save someone’s life.
House fire safety, how to properly use electronics and other tools, and dealing with harsh Alaska weather conditions were also key learning components of the event.
“We have very volatile conditions and we’re always out and about in our community,” Kinross Alaska External Affairs Superintendent Brenna Schaake said. “It’s important that kids learn early on how to be safe in all situations.”
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Emergency Operations Department and Kinross Alaska hosted their Emergency Preparedness and Youth Safety Day this past Saturday at the Carlson Center.
