ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - On Tuesday, more than 204,000 ballots were mailed for the Anchorage municipal election on April 1.

Elections administrator William Northrop said registered voters can expect to receive their ballots within the next few days but should email or call the Election Center at 907-243-VOTE if they don’t.

“If you don’t receive your ballot by March 18, call us for different options,” Northrop said. “We can send out a replacement ballot, we can do a vote by email or a vote by fax. And new this year, is a vote by secure document portal.”

Northrop encouraged people who are interested in knowing exactly what stage their ballot is in to sign up for the free service called “ballottrax” on the municipal website.

“Ballottrax is a great way for voters to know when their ballot is mailed out, when we receive it at the Election Center, whether or not their vote has been counted or needs curing,” he said.

People who request a replacement ballot, then either find or receive their original ballot shouldn’t worry, according to Northrop, who said they should vote whichever ballot they receive first. He said the system has guardrails in place to make sure only one ballot is counted should someone accidentally or purposely vote twice.

Northrop said people who want to vote in any other way than by paper ballot need to call or email the Election Center for an application, including the new secure document portal.

“In the past we have received calls from voters saying some of our options are not fully electronic,” Northrop said. “So, our vote by email, for example, you still need to print out certain things for you to vote. With the secure document portal, it is a fully electronic system where we are sending your ballot via a secure portal. And that way you are able to vote via your phone or your computer in an electronic manner.”

Secure ballot drop boxes also went up on Monday, which are located throughout town. Northrop said those ballots will be collected daily starting on Wednesday.

And although the election is considered a “vote at home,” people can still vote in person. Vote Centers open for the April 1 election on March 25.
