WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) - A Wasilla resident who allegedly fired an assault rifle at a police car was shot and killed by law enforcement on Sunday evening, according to Alaska State Troopers.

In an email, AST spokesperson Austin McDaniel wrote that they were looking for 34-year-old Brett George after someone placed a 911 call around 10 p.m. reporting that George was threatening family with a weapon.

As troopers arrived, George put on body armor and armed himself with an assault rifle, according to the troopers' report. He left in his car, and the victims were able to escape the residence.

A Wasilla police officer stopped George in a traffic stop half a mile away from the residence. However, George fled in the vehicle, and the officer pursued him, according to troopers.

George stopped at the intersection of Knik Goose Bay Road and Settlers Bay Drive, where he then got out of his vehicle and fired the assault rifle at the marked Wasilla police car.

The Wasilla police officer returned fire, striking George. George was declared dead at the scene.

No other injuries have been reported at this time, according to troopers.

Following Wasilla Police Department policy, the police officer’s name will be released after 72 hours.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation will be conducting an investigation and will take over the case. Once their investigation is completed, it will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
