Fairbanks man stabs 2 by warming center off Cushman Street, police say
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - Two men were hospitalized early Thursday morning after being stabbed by a man who has been charged in the incident.
On Thursday at around 2 a.m., the Fairbanks Police Department responded to reports of a man threatening people at the warming center on 6th Avenue near Cushman Street.
Once on the scene, Fairbanks police witnessed an altercation and saw a man on the ground who police said appeared injured. The officer then stopped and approached the group of people, and two of the men began walking away and did not follow the officer’s commands to stop, according to FPD.
One of the men, Nelson Anthony Gabriel Simon, 28, appeared to be highly intoxicated and was detained by FPD. The officer discovered he had a large knife and blood on his hands and clothes.
After Simon was detained in the patrol car, the officer began providing medical attention to the victim whom the officer had seen lying on the ground. The Fairbanks Fire Department medics arrived and took over.
According to FPD, around the same time the ordeal took place, another victim showed up at the FPD station with stab wounds. It was later discovered that both victims had been walking together when Simon, along with another man and woman, approached the victims and assaulted them.
FPD said both victims described the suspect, which matched Simon’s description.
Simon was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery.
The other man who fled the scene has been identified as Jereth Lawrence, who police are still wanting to speak with.
