3 officers ‘legally justified’ in killing of Kasilof man who shot another trooper, prosecutors say
KASILOF, Alaska (KTUU) - Three Alaska State Troopers who fired their guns in a fatal officer-involved shooting in January were judged to be legally justified in using deadly force against 32-year-old Mason Toloff, according to the Office of Special Prosecutions.
On Jan. 23, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) said after troopers responded to Crooked Creek Road, Toloff threatened to shoot the officers with a shotgun.
According to DPS, after a SWAT team arrived, Toloff shot a trooper in the leg. She was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and has since returned to full duty.
Hours later, DPS says Toloff pointed his shotgun at officers again. That’s when troopers Ethan Norwood and Jonathan Lindblom, and Homer Police Officer Charles Lee fired their weapons at Toloff, killing him.
A DPS spokesperson says all Troopers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras.
