VIDEO: Anchorage Pel’Meni crash caught on camera as repairs underway following hit-and-run
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A local restaurant known for its Russian dumplings has begun rebuilding after a vehicle crashed through its wall.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, the crash happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. The blue Dodge Ram that collided with the building remained in its place unoccupied after officers arrived on the scene.
Newly obtained dashcam video footage by Alaska’s News Source on Wednesday shows the moment the truck collided with the building.
Nearby witnesses who said they saw the crash reported that the driver ran away after the incident. They described one person believed to be the driver as a man between 25-30, approximately 6′3″ tall with an athletic build.
Witnesses also told police a second vehicle, a white Ford F-150, may have also been involved in the crash.
APD confirmed one employee was in the building at the time of the crash and sustained a non-life-threatening eye injury.
By Monday, contractors were starting their repairs. The wall facing 5th Avenue, left agape by the crash, was temporarily boarded up.
On Wednesday, Mark Moore, owner of Pel’Meni, did not have an estimate for how long the repairs would take.
Moore said in a text to Alaska’s News Source that they are insured through their business coverage as well as the building owner, but said they aren’t yet certain how much the repairs will cost.
“I’m told it’s a complex claim, but we have confidence in those professional folks to get us through the disaster. We just serve dumplings,” Moore wrote.
Contractors at the scene said they were working to clear the space while waiting for engineers to arrive and check electrical connections in the building.
