NENANA, Alaska (KTUU) - One glance and most Alaskans recognize that iconic tripod.

The Nenana Ice Classic tripod was originally placed on the Tanana River to monitor whether the ice was safe enough for temporary train tracks. Taking place for more than 100 years, the Nenana Ice Classic bills itself as Alaska’s “greatest guessing game.”

While the original tripod was made of skinny spruce trees, today’s version is a 26-foot tall wooden structure that’s so heavy it has to be taken apart and reconstructed on the ice. A new tripod is built every year because once it tips over, the force of the ice breaks it into pieces and they float downriver.

Even though this is a winter event, stopping by in the spring and summer gives folks a chance to view the beautiful river and take a photo with the tripod replica at the edge of town!
