FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU) - The summer might not seem like the season for hot springs, but at Chena Hot Springs Resort it’s always time to feel the heat. The natural springs are kept between 100 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit but the water comes out of the earth much warmer than that.

“Coming out of ground between 160-165, so right behind me, there’s a little spot there,” said Todd Garcia, Assistant Manager for the poolhouse. “We have a valve that we open and close to let the water in. We check it every two hours to make sure that the temperatures are within tolerable ranges.”

It’s more than tolerable — it’s fantastic! And because it’s summer, there are fewer visitors which means there’s more open space to quietly relax in the springs.

Beyond the natural springs, there are indoor and outdoor hot tubs as well as an indoor pool and lounge area for those hot sunny days.

Garcia says the best time to visit the springs is when it’s extremely cold outside.

“Best time is in the winter. I think when we’re 30 below zero, it’s magic in there,” said Todd.

Winter Roadtrippin’, anyone?
