Roadtrippin’ 2024: Alaska’s iconic glaciers come into view on the Phillips’ 26 Glacier Cruise
WHITTIER, Alaska (KTUU) - After riding the rails from Anchorage to Whittier, the Roadtrippin’ crew continued their adventure on a hunt for iconic glaciers and Alaskan wildlife.
Once we made their way out of Whittier, it was onto Prince William Sound on the Phillips Cruises 26 Glacier Cruise.
It’s 360-degree views of massive mountains and bright blue water from the beginning, but just moments into the trip, the first glaciers come into view.
Valley glaciers spill out of the mountains, but it is the ice floating in the water that hints at a nearby tidewater glacier. Columns of blue cascade right into the water.
About a half-dozen tidewater glaciers are in College Fjord, including Smith Glacier and the much larger Harvard Glacier. The captain explains this wall of blue ice is about a mile and a quarter wide from left to right, and the face of it is around 300 to 400 feet tall, going back 26 miles.
As we cruise from glacier to glacier, we keep an eye out for wildlife. Onboard Chugach National Forest Ranger Aubrey Jurgerson keeps us informed about what we’re seeing.
