Roadtrippin’ 2024: Sustainable cruising aboard the Silversea Silver Nova
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Silversea Silver Nova is a new ship, less than a year old, and its design and the programs on board are specifically in place to reduce its impact on the environment through which it travels every day.
“It’s very important, because looking into the future, we want to have, let’s say, the cleanest planet,” said Domenico Bellantone, Environmental Officer on the Silver Nova.
From an advanced waste water treatment system to reducing air emissions while in port, to turning food waste into compostable materials, the Silver Nova strives to reduce its impact on the air, land and sea.
Parts of the ship were specifically engineered to help with that goal. The hull of the Silver Nova is designed for greater speed and a smoother ride. This is good for the passengers and for regions the Silver Nova passes through.
Bellantone says the design of the hull will eliminate the wake-ship effect and limit the impact of coastal erosion.
One notable item missing from the ship... plastics. This is a plastic-free ship, particularly plastic water bottles.
“Because as we know by statistic, the ocean are really, really contaminated and polluted by this plastic unfortunately,” Bellantone.
Each cruise passenger is given a reusable water bottle which can be filled up in each stateroom or at a water station onboard prior to heading ashore, because as Bellantone says, a bunch of small things can have a big impact.
“It’s very, very important... for the planet to do so,” said Bellantone.
