Military members and their families hit the slopes for free during ‘Military Monday’ at Alyeska
GIRDWOOD, Alaska (KTUU) - Girdwood’s Alyeska Resort welcomed military members and their families to hit the slopes and take part in Military Monday.
The program has been in place for over a decade and offers free lift tickets for active duty and retired military, veterans and their families on the first Monday of the month throughout the ski season.
“For many of the service members who are here experiencing this day, this could be their first time at a ski resort, skiing or snowboarding on a chair lift or sliding on snow,” said Bayne Salmon, Alyeska Mountain Communications Manager. “It’s a great way to knock down some of those barriers to an otherwise sort of tough sport or activity to get into.”
Arriving by Black Hawk helicopter, Alaska Army National Guard members are familiar faces at the events.
Recruiter and Sgt. 1st Class James Kempner said it’s not only an opportunity for the public to learn more about the work they do, but also to deepen the Guard’s connections with local communities.
“The biggest thing we’re hoping people take away from this is that the National Guard is here, we are part of the community. You can be part of us because we’re already part of you,” he said, “It’s a team mission between us and the community to make sure that our state and our local areas are better each day.”
The final Military Monday event this season will be on Monday, April 7.
