ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaskans on Thursday are remembering the life and legacy of the Tlingit leader Walter Soboleff, who was born on this date in 1908 in Killisnoo, Alaska.

The state has observed Walter Soboleff Day for the last decade.

Soboleff, whose warmth was felt by the hundreds of Alaskans who crossed paths with him, served in the Presbyterian Church, Juneau Lions Club, University of Alaska and Alaska National Guard, to name a few.

He was known for his wisdom, as well as genuine personal touch.

The leader liked to send kindness and encouragement through handwritten notes and cards, a simple yet profound gesture that made people feel seen and valued.

During November, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum is encouraging people to send their own note of encouragement to someone by providing free note cards and postage.
