ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Jonathan Hayes is the owner of the Poland Springs Seppala Kennels in Maine. His kennel is made up of dogs of the Seppala Siberian Husky breed.
Hayes says his dogs are registered descendants of Leonhard Seppala’s dog team that participated in the life-saving serum run to Nome in 1925.
To mark the 100-year anniversary of the relay of diphtheria serum to Nome, Hayes — along with polar explorer Eric Larsen — will mush his dogs along the original route taken from Nenana to Nome. They plan on leaving Jan. 27, 2025; exactly 100 years to the day from the original event. A documentary will be produced about the journey.
