ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The owner of an Anchorage tour business is raising funds to bring a group of Kenyan school kids to Alaska for the start of next year’s Iditarod.

Brad Schmitz owns Alaska English Adventures. During the pandemic, he created a pen pal group so that people could stay connected.

There are now people in 25 countries all around the world who are participating in the group, including kids from a school in Kenya.

The Sheba Education Center is located in Nairobi, Kenya, and has paired up with Homer Middle School on the Kenai Peninsula. Through this connection, the Kenyan student caught Iditarod fever.

The students wrote notes of encouragement that were handed out to mushers in the 2024 race. They built their version of an Iditarod sled, and their teacher wondered what it would be like to stand at the starting line for the Iditarod.

Schmitz decided to see if he could make that happen. He has about five weeks to raise the money for airfare, and figures about $25,000 is needed to get the students to Alaska.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help raise funding for the trip.
