ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The sun is out, the snow has melted, and the rivers and lakes of Alaska are once again ready to welcome eager anglers.

Of course, before filling that first bucket full of salmon, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game requires residents and nonresidents to purchase a sport fishing license, which can be done both online and in person.

“You can come into a local office, you can go to a vendor in your local area, you can also get your license online yourself and through our ADF&G mobile app,” ADF&G Information Officer Katelyn Zonneville said.

The state requires all nonresidents and Alaskans over 16 and 18, respectively, to purchase a sport fishing license.

But even with that license in hand, there are still other rules to follow, such as the department’s emergency orders, which this year include the closures of king salmon fisheries in the Susitna and Kenai River drainages.

“Definitely double-check all the emergency orders,” Zonneville said. “There have been some changes to lower Kenai Peninsula streams as well — hatchery-only fish and things like that.”
