ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It is hard to believe a fish as small as a hooligan has such a big impact on Southcentral Alaska, as it signifies the start of the fishing season.

The hotspot of Twentymile River is still providing buckets full of the small, smelly smelt, with anglers seeing success this week a few hours before high tide.

Waders, a dipnet, and a cooler are recommended pieces of equipment, but being an Alaska resident and having an updated fishing license is required.

There is no catch limit for hooligan, which are good for eating fried or dried, while some turn the hooligan into halibut and use it as bait.

The hooligan season is almost as small as the fish, with the saltwater season ending May 31 and the freshwater season closing June 15. All fishing regulations and guidelines can be found on the Fish and Game website.
