Fishing Report: Celebrating Independence Day on the Seward coast
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - While most of the Seward metro area was occupied with a certain race this week, that didn’t save the local fish population from eager anglers along the peninsula.
Stretching from Lowell Point to Fourth of July Beach, the waterfront saw people using many methods to snag their preferred catch. Some choose to keep things simple.
“I throw a bait caster because I get more control on this and get a longer cast,” said Anchorage’s Austin Waggoner.
“I’ve got a spinner on that makes some flashes and imitates a fish and then I have some bait for scent,” another beachgoer said.
Others took it one step further, adding a bit of ingenuity.
“We are trolling,” Michael Durrant said. “We just get in our sea kayak and we’ll put a plug on the back. We just paddle along and then we get one.”
Of course, there’s not much to fishing without the fish themselves.
“No luck for us,” a group of local anglers said.
That is, until a bit later.
Only this time, the fish weren’t being reeled in. Instead, they were being tossed. Hundreds gathered to watch as teams of two attempted the Fourth of July fish toss. The winning team walked back a tad smellier, but with a prize catch in hand.
“We’ll maybe fry it up. Eat it with some chips,” the excited pair said.
