ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - In the wake of recent Trump administration-signed executive orders, nonprofits nationwide are facing the possibility of significant federal funding cuts, leaving hundreds of Alaska tribes and nonprofit organizations confused and worried.

The executive orders signed by President Donald Trump that called for the freeze and elimination of federal funding on Jan. 27 were shortly thereafter rescinded by the Office of Management and Budget on Jan. 29 due to legal challenges nationwide.

However, the threat still looms as some organizations are still facing a freeze, with some even experiencing funding elimination.

On Tuesday, The Foraker Group — whose mission is to support Alaska nonprofits and tribal organizations — released a report showing survey results on how the funding cuts could specifically impact nonprofits around the state.

According to the report, they received close to 300 survey responses from organizations with more than half reporting that the funding freeze could shut down their organization, and over 10% said it would put them out of business.

”The immediacy and the sweeping decisions to eliminate all funding was shocking, to say the least, unprecedented," The Foraker Group President and CEO Laurie Wolf said. “We wanted to get our arms around ... what does it mean when you pull the funding of the federal funding out of Alaska’s nonprofits and out of our state?”

Wolf also explained how important Alaska’s nonprofit organizations are for providing resources to Alaskans when the government is unable to.

“Our nonprofits also provide the services that county governments would provide in the Lower 48,” Wolf said. “We want Alaskans to understand how these services are delivered in our state, how they count on Alaska’s nonprofits every day to deliver these services, and the impacts of those of what would happen if we saw an elimination of that funding.”

The Foraker Group has set up a webpage outlining the current impacts of federal funding cuts on Alaska including federal action updates.
