Final election results: Anchorage Assembly adds 4 first-time members
Goecker, Baldwin Day, Silvers and McCormick secure victories
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Municipality of Anchorage certified its April 1 election results on Tuesday evening at the Anchorage Assembly meeting.
The two incumbents for Assembly seats — Kameron Perez-Verdia for West Anchorage Seat D and Daniel Volland for North Anchorage Seat L — were both reelected. They both had held substantial leads since the last day of voting.
Perez-Verdia won with 64.6% of the votes, and Volland won with 60.3%.
As for the Anchorage School Board, both incumbents — Margo Bellamy for Seat A and Kelly Lessens for Seat B — claimed victories. Bellamy received 57.2% of the votes and Lessens received 57.9%.
As for the races where the incumbents did not run, such as the Chugiak/Eagle River/JBER Assembly race, Jared Goecker was elected with 54.9% of the votes, about 17% more total votes than Kyle Walker.
In the Midtown Anchorage Assembly race, previously held by Meg Zaletel, Erin Baldwin Day won with 63.7% against Don Smith.
In the East Anchorage race, a seat previously held by Karen Bronga, Yarrow Silvers was elected to Seat H with 54.2% of the vote.
As for the South Anchorage/Girdwood Assembly seat previously held by Randy Sulte, Keith McCormick won by a wide margin with 91% of the vote, while Darin Colbry received the remaining votes.
The key propositions, such as Prop. 1, passed by a small margin, with just over 51% voting “Yes” to allow $63.8 million for capital improvement for Anchorage School District facilities.
Prop. 2 passed with 60%, allowing for $33.7 million for Anchorage roads and storm drainage bonds.
Prop. 3 passed with 54%, allowing for about $8.25 million to Anchorage Parks and Recreation.
Prop. 10 passed with 59.8% approval, creating a special tax for a maximum of $3.5 million annually for new snowplowing and hauling vehicles.
Prop. 11, which would create a special tax for new police vehicles worth no more than $3 million annually, failed with a 56.7% “No” vote.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, an ordinance proposing a ban on kratom was postponed and referred to the Public Health and Safety Committee according to the Municipal Clerk’s Office.
The Food and Drug Administration says kratom is a supplement often used to treat depression and opioid use disorder, but reports that it will, “continue to warn the public against the use of kratom for medical treatment.”
A ban would make recreational possession of nitrous oxide and kratom a misdemeanor in Anchorage.
Editor’s note: Voting percentages vary in some races due to some voters not marking everything on their ballot, according to Anchorage election officials. This explains why some races do not show percentages adding up to 100%.
This story has also been updated to clarify that East Anchorage candidate Yarrow Silvers was elected to Seat H. A previous version erroneously stated that she was “appointed,” which is not the case.
