ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - For the first time since 2023, the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation has opened up the Anchorage waiting list for Housing Choice Vouchers.

The federally funded vouchers allow qualifying participants to select a unit in the private rental market, with the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation paying a portion of the rent to the landlord. The application period runs through the end of April.

“Once you’re on the list and your number is called, you’ll have the opportunity for screening to ensure you meet HUD’s requirements for housing (this basically means that you qualify based on your income). Following a successful screening, you’ll be issued a voucher which will give you the opportunity to shop for an apartment anywhere in the Anchorage area,” AHFC Public Relations Director Stacy Barnes wrote in an email to Alaska’s News Source.

Barnes confirmed there are currently fewer than 200 people on the waiting list, and while it’s not uncommon for people to wait a year or more, AHFC Public Housing Director Catherine Stone said she expected new families could be called as early as July.

People can apply for a voucher online or receive help at AHFC’s Family Investment Center computer lab, which is located at 440 E Benson Boulevard.

After the application period closes on April 30, applications will be randomly assigned a number, and AHFC will notify applicants of their status by email.
