1 teen dead, another charged with DUI, manslaughter following crash in Rabbit Creek
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - One teenager is dead and another is being charged with DUI and manslaughter after a crash early Monday morning in Anchorage’s Rabbit Creek neighborhood.
According to Sgt. David Noll with the Anchorage Police Department, all three occupants of the car were juveniles.
Police said it happened at about 2:40 a.m. along a hillside residential road. Officers arrived at Bluebell Drive shortly after receiving a 911 call from the driver who said a passenger was pinned under the vehicle, according to APD.
When officers arrived, they found a Ford F350 pickup truck upside down with a teenage boy pinned underneath it. Medics with the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the scene and declared him dead.
Noll says the driver is charged with DUI and manslaughter. According to Noll, the driver veered off the road and crashed into a curve.
On Monday — with Anchorage students out of school due to the Indigenous Peoples/Columbus Day holiday — Service High School Principal Imtiaz Azzam sent out an email to families from that school confirming the death of one of its students.
“While information is still being gathered, we know that the loss of a classmate can be profoundly difficult for students, staff and the greater school community,” Azzam wrote. “In response, we have arranged for support staff to be available at school in the coming days. We encourage any student or family member who needs additional support to reach out. The school day will remain on schedule.”
On Tuesday, a memorial with flowers and balloons were set at the scene of the accident. People who knew the deceased teen told Alaska‘s News Source at the site that he was an avid skier who was always in Girdwood. They said he also worked at Moose’s Tooth Pub & Pizzeria in Midtown Anchorage.
They also said he was a mountain bike enthusiast, a funny personality and an overall good person.

The Service principal also included a couple of informational flyers (one on understanding grief and another on helping children address grief) to help families affected by the death of the student.
The investigation is ongoing.
