Recount begins on ranked-choice voting repeal measure: here’s how it works
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The recount on ballot measure 2 to repeal ranked-choice voting has begun in Juneau.
Director of the Division of Elections Carol Beecher said the ballots are scanned, and any absentee, questioned, early, or rejected ballots are analyzed. She said any ballots needing adjudication are put under review. A decision is then made by the director.
Ballots up for review are typically ballots containing an undervote, overvote, or indeterminate marks.
Beecher said if a party challenges a decision, those ballots are then quarantined for the record.
The ballots are grouped and recounted by state House district. The recount is not open to viewing by the public. The results of the recount will be announced once the process is complete after 10 days.
The Alaska Division of Elections said the recount started at 4 p.m. Tuesday, and goes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. over the following 10 days, including the weekend, meaning a result could be determined by late next week.
The measure failed by a little more than 700 votes in November’s election. The Alaska Republican Party called for the recount, which will be funded by the state since the measure failed by less than a 0.5% margin.
