ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska has a higher rate of binge drinking than most of the country, according to the State Department of Health.

Concerning metrics like one are nothing new to Recover Alaska, a statewide action group based in Anchorage. Thus, as part of its mission to reduce excessive alcohol use and harm, the group is supporting those wishing to take on the Dry January challenge.

Dry January is a one-month challenge to abstain from all alcohol.

“It just helps people recognize what their relationship with alcohol is and if it needs to change,” said Tiffany Hall, the president and CEO of Recover Alaska.

Hall said the month-long event is beginning to catch on worldwide. Still, she said it’s important not to assume others are on board.

“Make sure to listen to your friends,” she said, “support them and maybe check out a sober event instead of going to a bar or something that might otherwise center around alcohol.”

The nonprofit will be holding mocktail and other Dry January events in Anchorage, Homer and Bethel this month.
