UAA women claim 7th GNAC b-ball crown
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The University of Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team is back on top of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Five years after the Seawolves last hoisted the GNAC trophy, UAA returned to the top of the conference on Saturday with a 75-59 victory over tournament host St. Martin’s University.
It’s UAA’s seventh GNAC trophy (2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020, 2025) in 14 years and fifth under coach Ryan McCarthy.
UAA senior and tournament MVP Tori Hollingshead finished with a team-high 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Hollingshead shot 10-for-12 at the free-throw line and played a game-high 38 minutes.
“I don’t think it was the perfect game, but I thought that the ladies battled,” McCarthy said. “To play 30 whatever minutes in our system is crazy talk but I truly believe that no one works harder than these girls do. And we did this with eight players. You know, the Division II allotment is 10, and we are not working with that right now.”
UAA is the West Region’s No. 4 team as the NCAA Division II Tournament tips off later this week. UAA will face GNAC foe Montana State-Billings on Friday in the first round.
