ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage Municipal Street Maintenance announced that their snow plow crews will begin plowing residential streets at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Crews are currently plowing arterial and collector routes and will move to residential streets after 8 p.m.

Crews will also be clearing snow from downtown roads overnight and are currently clearing MOA sidewalks and trails.

A daily snowfall record was broken for Oct. 28 — the 6″ that fell on Monday beat the previous record of 4.8″ set in 1982.

As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, 11.5 inches of snow was officially measured in Anchorage.

It was also the first time Anchorage has seen 6″ of snow on an October day in 18 years.

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance posted in an email that after focusing plowing crews on West Anchorage, where snowfall was the heaviest late Monday night, the city had to begin replowing roads after more snow fell early Tuesday morning.

The mayor said 25 trucks were tasked with clearing downtown Anchorage overnight, with residential streets to follow.

Anchorage drivers to face bumpy, slick road conditions

The Anchorage Police Department said that as of Tuesday afternoon, there were 46 vehicles in distress, 26 reported accidents, and three additional crashes with injuries. APD said those numbers were reported between midnight and 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The snow was heavy enough to close Anchorage School District schools for the day and force students into remote learning.

The city also revealed a new website that the public can check to see updated plowing information and routes that have been cleared after a major snowfall.

Updates and more information can also be found on the MOA Street Maintenance website.
