ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Anchorage School District’s superintendent says he’s looking forward to another year at the helm of Alaska’s largest school district.

“Year 3 for me is where the rubber hits the road and I want to see this through,” said ASD’s Jharrett Bryantt, who was hired in 2022 to replace Deena Bishop. “I’m very thankful to have some more time to be here to really make sure these initiatives are successful.”

Bryantt has helped guide several changes in the district, including the adoption of new start times. ASD has also set up initiatives to attract more paraprofessional educators, an entry-level classroom position that assists teachers and students.

The superintendent is also ensuring students are vaccinated before they start school. The flu shot and Covid-19 vaccine are not required, but both are recommended.

“People travel — they go to the Lower 48 or they go international,” said Michelle Fehribach with the Anchorage Health Department. “And while some diseases or infections aren’t very common here, they are very common in other places so being vaccinated just makes sure that you’re protected.”
